What is reflexology? It is important to start with the point that reflexology is not simply a massage. A general foot massage can be very relaxing, but reflexology is a precise holistic complementary therapy. It should not be considered as an alternative to conventional medicine, but as a support to any medical treatment being received.
Holistic means whole and all aspects of the client are taken into account to help with their overall well-being. If the physical body is unwell or in pain, for example if you are suffering from a headache, your mind will not be as sharp as you would like it to be and your spirits will be low as a result. Given this illustration you may appreciate why your reflexology treatment should always be holistic in order to maintain a balance in the interlinked areas often referred to as “Mind, Body & Spirit”.
To a reflexologist the body is mirrored in reflexes in the feet and hands. By applying specific finger and thumb pressure to work these reflexes, imbalances are detected by the practitioner and they are able to treat the areas in need of attention. Using their skills, the reflexologist helps to return the body’s systems to a natural state of balance, by encouraging the clients own natural healing capabilities.
